Golden Hinde

The Golden Hinde is a working ship and learning is a ‘hands-on’ experience. The ship is equipped with a range of replica ship furniture and artefacts, all of which can be freely handled by pupils.

The varied Education Programme is led by experienced and enthusiastic costumed interpreters. The team comprises a skilled staff with backgrounds in museum education, re-enactment, theatre, carpentry, sailing, and museum retail.

Guided Tours - KS1-3

Let skilled interpreters, dressed in Tudor costume, show your party around the ship. Students will learn about life at sea for both officers and ordinary sailors, hear tales of Drake’s voyage around the world, learn of ship’s punishments and healthcare, get a chance to turn the capstan (used to raise the anchor), and learn how to fire a cannon.

Living History Days - KS1 & 2

Join the crew for a day! An exciting day-long living history experience in which pupils and staff dress in Tudor sailors’ costume and experience life aboard a Tudor warship. Workshops on navigation, barber surgery, and gun drill, led by three costumed interpreters. Pupils participate in a mock battle, move the yardarm, and turn the capstan. Lunch is provided in the form of a vegetable stew or pottage with bread, a typical meal in Tudor times.

Overnight Living History - KS1 & 2

Sleepover on the Golden Hinde! An unforgettable Living History Experience. After an afternoon and evening of activities aboard ship (see above), pupils and staff have the opportunity to sleep on the gundeck amongst the cannon. Actors tell scary stories at bedtime after a tasty dinner (vegetable stew and bread). A Tudor breakfast of bread and cheese is provided in the morning, followed by a snack of a doughnut and hot chocolate as you change back into your modern clothes and return to the 21st century!

The Voyage of the Golden Hinde - KS1 & 2

Spend a day on the Golden Hinde, participating in a set of linked activities that inform children about Francis Drake’s voyage around the globe between 1977 –1580. Workshops explore significant episodes in the voyage through practical tasks. Children are encouraged to empathise with Drake and his crew, giving them the opportunity to reason, evaluate and make decisions based on problems faced by the historical expedition. Costumed interpreters lead the activities, playing the roles of a mariner and barber surgeon. Costumes are also available for students and staff.

The Thomas Doughty Affair – KS2 & 3 (History and Citizenship)

An investigation into the affair of Thomas Doughty, an officer of Drake’s crew who was tried and executed during Drake’s circumnavigation of the world. Pupils take on the role of clerks who have come to gather evidence on behalf of Queen Elizabeth. The children are divided into two teams, each supported by a costumed actor playing either an officer or a mariner, who do not agree about whether Drake’s actions can be justified. Each team examines transcriptions of original documents, and hears the account of their actor, before joining in a debate at the end of the day. All action takes place on board and all participants will be provided with Tudor costume.

Both Living History days are being piloted during summer and autumn 2007; bookings are being taken for February 2008 onwards.
