The Rose, built in 1587, was the first Elizabethan Theatre on Bankside and was where Shakespeare learnt his craft. Remains of the Rose Theatre are protected and but there is an exhibition, accessed from Park Street.
Open Days on the site every Saturday 10am to 5pm (free entry but donations are kindly received) include a film presentation about the history of Bankside and the Rose Theatre, this includes the dig in 1989 and the future plans to redevelop and display the site.
The Rose Theatre Trust stages many productions of contemporary Elizabethan and modern dramatic work, recently winning 'Best Director' and 'Best New Writing' awards at the Fringe Report Awards. Shakespeare's Globe Exhibition also offers tours of the nearby Rose Theatre site to pre-booked groups and during matinee performances during its theatre season.
